Billboard caught up with Oller and Kelley to talk about what they've been through over the last couple of years, the inspiration for their comeback single and what the future holds for MKTO. Oller: It was really cool how "Classic" took us from one side of the world to another, but I think we never really had too much down time to really enjoy it.
Oller: Me personally, I've had some stuff I had to figure out. I got sober, which was definitely something I was battling for quite a while. I just wasn't acting right, and I wasn't being a very good friend, first and foremost. I think I took for granted everything we had to work to get to. Malcolm was always like, "I want you to be happy," and that meant the fucking world to me. I don't think I realized it until everything was gone. Kelley: He's one of my good friends, so it was easy to have that conversation.
Being happy and being in the right head space is so important, especially being in this business. Oller: I learned to embrace being vulnerable, dealing with my emotions very differently. As the writing process continues with this, it definitely comes into play when figuring out things you can discuss and write about.
Oller: Whenever we see someone supporting us or someone who doesn't speak English singing the lyrics or someone [sharing with us] something personal they're going through I mean, I am very happy to be sober now.
It may not be drinking or drugs. There are so many other ways to deal with stuff we go through in our lives. Once you come to terms with that, you can find what works for you. Malcolm Kelley: So many people go through this and you got to be there for them. Caring for them is what you got to do. How have your fans reacted to your journey Tony? Sometimes they tell us things that happened in their lives.
It means a lot when they say how listening to our music has helped them. What can we expect next from you? Malcolm Kelley: We want to do more content and more songs and get out there and see our fans. We have more stuff in the works. Do you have any new dates, releases or anything else we should look out for? Tony Oller: We have a new song coming out in about a month or so. We decided to add it into the set. What are you most looking forward to in terms of being in front of your fans?
Malcolm Kelley: See the fans, making music, being on the road. Get out there and share. What is something you want to share with your fans? We try to make sure you make time to see everybody, say hello.
With us doing this for so long and being older, we still see a lot of younger fans. When it goes away, you really realize how great and how sweet all those fans and supporters are. We really want to make the sure we take the time to say thank you to everybody. MKTO is hitting the road for three California shows! After the show came to an end in , the musicians formed MKTO. Following their brief break in , the pair came back together to drop a few singles over the years.
